Spike Lee seems to think so and with characters like Madea, if you open your mind, it may seem like another stereotype. Think BIG MAMA.

Cornell West had a few things to say about this debate. I would side with him. The characters in Tyler Perry's works ARE popular, but that doesn't mean that they are the most positive images that African-Americans could be consuming.
